Stainless Steel Alloy 420
Type 420 Stainless Steel, popularly known as "surgical steel," is a commonly employed martensitic stainless steel with a high carbon content. It is comparable to Type 410, but is stronger and harder. It can be toughened through heat treatment, which provides metal fabricators with outstanding ductility and polishability.
It is resistant to corrosion in fresh water, alkaline solutions, air, foods, crude oil, gasoline, and mild acids. In its annealed or hardened/tempered state, Type 420 Stainless Steel is extremely robust and can be difficult to weld. However, in its annealed state, it may be easily machined.
Due to its superior qualities, Type 420 Stainless Steel is utilized in a wide range of industries and applications, including:
Dental and surgical instruments
Pump shafts
Plastic dies and molds
Steel balls
Scissors
Gear shafts
Cams
Pivots
Lens molds
The unique chemical formula for producing Type 420 stainless steel includes the following elements:
Cr 12-14%
Mn 1%
Si 1%
C 0.15%
