Nickel Alloy 405, Monel® R-405
As a member of the Monel family of superalloys, the nickel-copper alloy known as Monel® R-405 (also known as UNS N04405) was developed and produced by Special Metals. It also goes by the designation UNS N04405. Because it has a larger percentage of sulfur, Monel 405 has improved machinability, and it is most commonly encountered in rod, bar, and wire form. In addition to that, this superalloy possesses high levels of strength as well as exceptional corrosion resistant qualities. Due to these qualities, it is perfectly suited for use in harsh chemical and marine conditions. In addition to this, it is unaffected by sulfuric acids and functions satisfactorily in extremely cold temperatures. The following elements make up the chemical makeup of monel r-405,
-
Nickel 63%
-
Copper 28-34%
-
Carbon .3% max
-
Manganese 2% max
-
Iron 2.5% max
-
Silicon 0.5 max
-
Sulfur 0.025-0.060%
Some of the other benefits of Monel R-405 include:
It is approved by ASME for use in boilers, pressure vessels, and nuclear vessels
Can be fabricated, pickled, and heat-treated exactly like Monel 400
Meets a wide variety of industry specs including: ASME SB-164, ASTM B-164, MIL-N-894 and many more
Some popular applications for Monel alloy R-405 include:
-
Heat exchangers
-
Oil refinery piping
-
Sulfuric Acid Plants
-
Nuclear Fuel production
-
Pump shafts
