Key Considerations for Processing Stamped Bends

Key Considerations for Processing Stamped Bends

Stamped bends, also known as press bends, are versatile pipe fittings widely used across various industries due to their excellent corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance. They are typically manufactured from metal sheets with properties matching those of the pipelines and are created by welding two semi-circular bend components together. The welding process for stamped bends must adhere to specific procedures. As different welding standards apply to various pipelines, semi-finished products are usually produced through a point-to-point maintenance approach, with on-site construction performed according to the welding grade of the pipeline, leading to the term "two semi-stamped bends."

Key Points to Consider:

1. Corrosion and Oxidation Resistance:

Stamped bends are highly resistant to corrosion and oxidation, which has contributed to their extensive application in fields such as chemical engineering, fertilizer production, petroleum, and medical equipment manufacturing.

2. Corrosion, Heat, and Wear Resistance:

Stamped bends exhibit corrosion resistance against oxidative acids, organic acids, and cavitation. They are also heat-resistant and possess good wear resistance. They find application in equipment and materials used in power plants, chemical processing, and the petroleum industry.

3. Electrode Selection:

Stamped bends can be coated with titanium-calcium or low-hydrogen electrodes. While titanium-calcium electrodes can be used for both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) welding, AC welding results in shallower penetration and a higher likelihood of red heat. Therefore, it is advisable to use DC power sources whenever possible when welding stainless steel stamped bends.

4. High Hardness and Post-Weld Cracking:

Stamped bends have high hardness levels and are prone to post-weld cracking. To ensure high-quality welds, it is crucial to choose the appropriate welding rod. When welding stainless steel stamped bends of the same type, post-weld heat treatment is required. This involves preheating to temperatures exceeding 300°C and slow cooling to temperatures below 700°C. If the welded component cannot undergo post-weld heat treatment, chromium-nickel stamped bends should be selected. Different types of electrodes have distinct performance characteristics, and their selection is based on specific requirements to ensure the quality of the welded stamped bends.

5. Alloying Elements for Enhanced Properties:

To enhance corrosion resistance and weldability, small amounts of stabilizing elements such as titanium, niobium, and molybdenum are typically added during production. This results in better weldability compared to chrome stamped bends. When using the same type of chrome stainless steel stamped bends, a preheating temperature of at least 200°C is necessary, followed by an 800°C annealing process after welding. In cases where the welded component cannot undergo heat treatment, chrome-nickel stainless steel stamped bends should be chosen.

In summary, stamped bends are prized for their corrosion resistance and versatility across various applications. To achieve high-quality welds, selecting the right electrode, performing appropriate heat treatments, and considering the specific requirements of the application are essential steps in the production and use of stamped bends. These considerations ensure the longevity and performance of stamped bends in different industries.
