Welding Monel 400 (a nickel-copper alloy) to carbon steel requires special considerations due to differences in their thermal properties, melting points, and chemical compositions. 🛠️ Welding Process

The process used for welding Monel 400 to carbon steel is typically TIG (GTAW) or MIG (GMAW), but SMAW (Stick welding) can also be used for field work.


📋 Recommended Procedure for Welding Monel 400 to Carbon Steel

Step Details
Filler Material Use Nickel-based filler metal, such as ERNiCu-7 or ENiCu-7, for the weld joint.
Preparation of Materials Clean both metals thoroughly before welding to remove oxides, dirt, and oil.
Preheating Preheating of carbon steel (up to 150°C or 300°F) may be necessary to reduce the risk of cracking.
Heat Input Control heat input to avoid overheating Monel 400, which could lead to distortion or cracking.
Welding Sequence Use stringer beads instead of weave patterns to avoid excessive heat input in both metals.
Post-Weld Heat Treatment Post-weld heat treatment may be required to reduce residual stresses in carbon steel, but avoid subjecting Monel 400 to heat above 400°C (750°F).
Shielding Gas Use pure Argon or a mixture of Argon and Helium for TIG/MIG welding to avoid contamination.
Cooling Rate Allow the welded joint to cool slowly, avoiding rapid cooling that can result in brittle welds.

Different Thermal Expansion: Monel 400 has a lower thermal expansion than carbon steel, which can cause residual stresses at the weld joint, leading to cracking.

Weld Integrity: Ensure proper fusion and penetration to avoid porosity or weak joints.

Corrosion Resistance: Monel 400's superior corrosion resistance may be compromised if not welded correctly, especially in the heat-affected zone (HAZ).
