Iron Alloy Types

Iron alloys are metals composed primarily of iron mixed with other elements to enhance properties like strength, corrosion resistance, hardness, and ductility. The two main categories are steel and cast iron, each with multiple subtypes.

 


 

🔧 1. Steel Alloys (Iron + Carbon + Other Elements)

 

a. Carbon Steel

Low Carbon Steel (<0.3% C): Ductile, weldable, used in structural applications.

Medium Carbon Steel (0.3–0.6% C): Stronger, used in automotive parts.

High Carbon Steel (>0.6% C): Hard and brittle, used in tools and springs.

 

b. Alloy Steel

Contains elements like chromium, nickel, molybdenum, vanadium.

Improved strength, toughness, and wear resistance.

Applications: gears, pipelines, military equipment.

 

c. Stainless Steel

Contains ≥10.5% chromium.

Excellent corrosion resistance.

Types:

Austenitic (e.g., 304, 316): Non-magnetic, corrosion-resistant.

Ferritic (e.g., 430): Magnetic, lower corrosion resistance.

Martensitic (e.g., 410): Hard, used in knives and turbines.

 

d. Tool Steel

High hardness and wear resistance.

Used for cutting tools, dies, molds.


 

⚙️ 2. Cast Iron Alloys (Iron + >2% Carbon)

 

a. Gray Cast Iron

Graphite flakes, good machinability, vibration damping.

Used in engine blocks, machinery bases.

 

b. White Cast Iron

Hard, brittle, wears well.

Used in wear-resistant applications like mill liners.

 

c. Ductile (Nodular) Cast Iron

Spherical graphite inclusions, high strength and ductility.

Used in automotive parts, pipes.

 

d. Malleable Cast Iron

Heat-treated white iron.

Combines strength and machinability.

a. Wrought Iron

Very low carbon content, fibrous structure.

Historic use in gates and railings.

 

b. Superalloys (Iron-Nickel or Iron-Cobalt Based)

Excellent strength at high temperatures.

Used in aerospace and turbines.
