Inconel 718 Heat Treatment

Inconel 718 Heat Treatment is critical for developing its exceptional strength and corrosion resistance. The alloy is precipitation hardenable, meaning its mechanical properties are greatly enhanced by controlled heat treatment processes.

🔥 Common Heat Treatment Procedures for Inconel 718

Heat Treatment Type Process Details
Solution Annealing 925–980°C (1700–1800°F), hold for 1 hour, air cool or faster
Age Hardening (Precipitation) After solution anneal:
– 720°C (1328°F) for 8 hours → cool to 620°C (1148°F) and hold for 8 more hours → air cool
Double Aging (optional) For additional strength: intermediate holding at ~650–700°C

🔧 Purpose of Heat Treatment in Inconel 718

Solution Annealing: Dissolves carbides and intermetallic phases to restore a uniform structure.

Age Hardening: Precipitates gamma prime (γ') and gamma double prime (γ″) phases, significantly boosting strength, hardness, and creep resistance.

⚙️ Key Benefits After Proper Heat Treatment

Ultimate tensile strength > 1,300 MPa

Excellent fatigue resistance

Retains mechanical integrity up to 700°C

Ideal for aerospace, turbine, and nuclear applications
