Incoloy 825 Vs Ss316

Feature Incoloy 825 SS316
Composition Ni-Fe-Cr alloy with Mo and Cu additions (Ni 38-46%, Cr 19.5-23.5%, Mo 2.5-3.5%, Cu 1.5-3.0%) Iron-based alloy with Cr (16-18%), Ni (10-14%), Mo (2-3%)
Corrosion Resistance Superior resistance to strong acids (HCl, H2SO4), excellent against pitting and crevice corrosion Good corrosion resistance in most environments, moderate resistance to acids and chlorides
Temperature Range Good strength and corrosion resistance from -196°C to 550°C Good up to about 870°C, but less resistant to strong acids at high temps
Mechanical Strength Higher strength and toughness, especially at elevated temperatures Good strength but generally lower than Incoloy 825
Applications Chemical processing, acid handling, pollution control, aerospace, marine Food processing, pharmaceuticals, marine, general corrosion resistant applications
Cost Generally more expensive due to higher Ni, Mo, and Cu content More economical and widely used stainless steel grade

Summary:
Incoloy 825 is preferred for highly corrosive acid environments and high temperature, high strength needs, while SS316 is a versatile stainless steel suitable for general corrosion resistance and moderate environments.
