what is astm a105

Scope of Application:

ASTM A105 specification covers forged carbon steel piping components for ambient- and higher-temperature service in pressure systems. It includes flanges, fittings, valves, and similar parts ordered either to dimensions specified by the purchaser or to dimensional standards such as MSS, ASME, and API.

Heat Treatment Requirements:

Forgings made to ASTM A105 shall be normalized, or alternatively, when normalized is not applicable, liquid quenched and tempered provided the requirements of this specification are met. The steel shall conform to the required chemical composition for carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, copper, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, and phosphorus.

Chemical Composition:

The chemical composition of ASTM A105 steel is typically:

- Carbon (C): Maximum 0.35%

- Manganese (Mn): Maximum 0.60%

- Silicon (Si): Maximum 0.35%

- Sulfur (S): Maximum 0.040%

- Phosphorus (P): Maximum 0.040%

Mechanical Properties:

The mechanical properties of ASTM A105 steel are as follows:

- Yield Strength (YS): Minimum 250 MPa

- Tensile Strength (UTS): Minimum 485 MPa

- Elongation: Minimum 22%

- Impact Toughness: Minimum 27 J (20 ft·lbf)

These properties are applicable for forgings subjected to normalized and tempered heat treatment.
